PANEL 1: The ADMIRAL, yelling, points his finger dramatically while a pilot sits at a consol behind him. NARRATION: “Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth…” PANEL 2: La Invencible hovers above earth, cannons spool up at the front of the ship. NARRATION: And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings, sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth. PANEL 3: The cannons on the front of La Invencible blast several M-waves. NARRATION: Of sun-split clouds —and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swing high in the sunlit silence. PANEL 4: From the vantage of the m-waves, we zoom towards the Spark of Thought. NARRATION: Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, PANEL 5: From outside the Spark of Thought, through a window reflecting the blasts, we see the main TESSKAN with an eyepatch, seeing what’s coming. NARRATION: And flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. PANEL 6: The Tesskan is rocked by the blast. NARRATION: Up, up, the long, delicious burning blue PANEL 7: The Tesskan reacts, as rubble falls around him. NARRATION: I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grae where never lark, or even eagle flew— PANEL 8: The Tesskan yells and points, while two tesskans behind him also yell. NARRATION: And, while with silent lifting mimnd I’ve trod the high untresspassed sanctity of space, put out my hand… PANEL 9: From above earth, showing Spain and Europe, the two ships face head on, exchanging blasts. NARRATION: …and touched the face of God.” - —High Flight (1941), John Gillespie Magee —— Want to read the full story?
