Drive Timeline

Thursday, January 19, 2012 - 01:01 AM

I'm sure most folks will want to talk about The Vinn's encyclopedia entry, but I also wanted to throw this out there: I've been updating my personal timeline for the Drive universe, and thought it might be fun to share it with you. There might be a few things, below, that haven't come up in the strip yet! I can't recall.

Speaking of which: If you spot anything you think I have *wrong* on this timeline, or any key dates I've missed, do let me know!

1870 First Veetan ships begin venturing into space
1980 Renegade pre-Maker's ship has catastrophic accident
2081 Veetan ship comes into contact with a Continuum ship
2258 Conrado finds the Continuum ship
2273 First human contact with Veetans
2291 First human contact with Tesskans/Fillipods. There are skirmishes in and around Tesskil, but it mostly ends there for the Empire... as it will take Tesskans 80 years to get to Earth.
2331 First human contact with The Vinn
2332-2334 Human-Vinn War
2350 "The Rebellion" begins in the Outer Colonies
2365 The Tres Primos begin the campaign against the Empire
2379 The first Tesskan near-light-drive ships begin entering human space
2380-2383 Human-Tesskan War
2384 First Imperial contact with the Continuum
2384 Machito re-christened as a military scout ship
2386 Taneel takes command of the battle cruiser Sevillana
2392-2398 Nosh stuck in Moscow for six years
2398 Nosh joins Captain Taneel's crew
2400 Fernando joins Captain Taneel's crew
2401 Emperor Manuel Jose Cruz murdered. Nosh taken into custody. Captain Taneel relieved of command of Sevillana. Skitter wakes up in prison.

Wow, this is more interesting than I would have guessed. But I guess that's why I don't write the story. I'm already wondering if the Vinn creation stories are wrong, and there's a more sinister origin to this parasite. Perhaps the parasite is more sentient than we think. Perhaps there never were any original Vinnshashans.

I'm assuming if that is the artificial Maker in the missing Continuum box, then the parasite shouldn't be able to infect it, given that it's a machine. But who knows?

Brilliant! I think if you'd put together everyone's commented speculations from the last post we'd have been about 80% there. Love the parasite idea.

Do The Vinn have ring technology? It's not obvious from the view of their ship and the encyclopaedia entry talks of their "slow spread"

I'll add my "Wow" to the pile. Well, at least now we know why nobody wants to live on Vinn, though I am certain that there are legions of H sap., at least, who would Borg up in a heartbeat. Heck, there are probably a hundred in my city alone who would head for Vinn on the basis of this Xenobiologica entry alone. Don't know about the other sentients.

Could un-tattooed human-Vinn infiltrate human society? How does any non-Vinn live on Vinn, without being infected? A vaccine?

Your encyclopedia entry says the war ended in 2234 - 97 years before the Vinn and Humans met!

Well, I think it's a simple misprint, as your timeline states the war ended in 2334. :)

Wow, the Vinn are another big surprise! They sound rather dangerous, unless one can inoculate against the infection. But that's just one of the more impressive things about this series, that aliens truly are alien, and not just humans in a different form. It's more than just a cultural difference.

Great stuff!

Ha! I was right, The Vinn are a group rather than a race. This will be interesting...

The Tres Primos could be as young as their early fifties based on this. How old are you assuming that they were when they rebelled?

(Talking of rebellion, has the Rebellion in the Outer Colonies been covered yet? I'm not certain if I've seen it mentioned.)

In Response to macsnafu (#60878):

I have to agree with macsnafu, the part that sets your story above most sci-fi is that the aliens are wholly and completely unique culturally. They are not humans with pointy ears, funny foreheads, and odd attitudes. They have their own ideals, beliefs, and paradigms about life, and that is why I love this comic. That and Nosh is just awesome.

When was Nosh's grandfather on the moon where he saw others of Skitter's race? And is 2258 also the year of founding of The Empire?

Wow! 'Born again' aliens wanting to spread the word of their gods (which is nothing but an infection)? Awesome!
